I had an interesting week last week as a homeschooling parent. My son is a great kid, full of wonderful ideas, creative and bright. Sitting down to do schoolwork is like pulling teeth for him so I've tried to roll it into the occasional Outschool applied learning class like Ian Nelson's engineering classes (always a hit). I had a win though in my own applied math project! I gave him some parameters around an apartment building with one angled wall and how he had to create a 600-800 sq ft. apartment that could be replicated in the building.
He had so much fun working out the areas of each room and even calculated correctly the area of the whole apartment as a complex shape! YAY! Instead of an hour of workbook boredom, this was a huge applied learning project based win!
